We had a DIY Olive Oil Tasting party with the help of California Olive Oil. It works just like a wine tasting but with oil!
We went through the 4 S’s: Swirl, Sniff, Slurp & Swallow.
The group faves were Abequina, Millers Blend and Garlic olive oil. I love to cook with the garlic olive oil. We had some good questions from the group.
1. How long should you keep olive oil?
2. Can you refrigerate it?
3. What do you think about restaurants that bring out the caddy with open drizzle bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar?
Olive oil should be used within 30-60 days of opening. It should not be refrigerated because you need to purchase the right size bottle for your household to maintain freshness.
Time, light, temperature and oxygen exposure breaks down olive oil—so those drizzle bottles you have at home or find at the restaurants are a bad idea. Think of olive oil like a fine wine. Would you expect your favorite bottle of wine to smell and taste the same after you let it sit out on your counter for 48 hours opened? Absolutely not!
We had a great time!
